How to Write a Good Argumentative Essay
Writing a good argumentative essay is a lot like watching a lawsuit on TV but in this case you are going to be a lawyer. What does lawyer use to convince a judge in his point and prove that his client is right (even if he is not)? The same thing you are going to do in your argumentative essay! A good argumentative essay is called to show your ability to compose a solid statement and defend your point with arguments. Writing a good argumentative essay students should remember that emotional language is not a real evidence, moreover in this case it can lower your grade significantly. Step One: Chose your topic
Sometimes students are free to chose their topic for argumentative essay. It is much better if you can find a topic yourself, because in this case you do not have to write about things you have no idea about. Be clever – pick a topic that you are good in and want to learn more about. If you are not limited with fields you can use for your argumentative essay – chose anything you like. For example, if you are good in computers – write about your favorite operation system and prove why it is better then another one. Remember that your teacher is less interested in what you are writing about than in how you argue it. So define your topic and go to the next step.
Step Two: Hypothesis
Since your teacher is not confident in your point yet, it would sound like hypothesis. Your hypothesis is a statement you believe in and going to defend. After you defined the topic you should decide on the statement. It should be the fact or phenomenon you strongly believe in and sure that you are able to prove it. You grade depends a lot on how good the hypothesis is composed. Make sure it sounds strong, logical and everything makes sense. Do not waste too much time and site your hypothesis in the end of introduction.
Step Three: Think like a lawyer
What would the lawyer do after he got his case? We would recommend you do a good research on your topic. You can not defend any point without a good knowledge of your subject. Take at least three or more sources and start your research. Learn as much as possible (focus on your free time and deadline) – collect facts, historical examples, scientific evidence. You are also free to use your own experience for supporting the point. It would be much faster and comfortable if you will take notes while reading. Mark the source and page where you found each evidence. Use exceptionally credible sources for writing a good argumentative essay.
Step Four: Be ready for questions
Be ready to research not only your point but opposite view as well. It is very important to know the strong sides of your opponent and find some supporting contra-facts and evidence to defend your statement well. So be sure to know both – yours and opponent's strong sides. Make sure that all your strong sides and benefits of the statement are listed in the essay and defended with at least two evidence.
